What is Collagen? Collagen is part of the natural support structure of your skin. In the skin it provides texture, resiliency and shape. Collagen is found throughout the body in skin, muscles, tendons and bones. The fibers are woven together like threads in fabric to form a framework into which new cells can grow.

Bovine and human Collagen are used in treatment. What’s the difference? Bovine and human collagen are very similar. As a result, bovine collagen has been effectively used in many medical treatments such as “sutures” and heart valves used for open heart surgery. Zyderm and Zyplast collagen implants are made from purified cow skin. Human collagen is made from purified human tissue and is readily accepted by the body, so the results are immediate and without risk of allergic reaction.

What role does Collagen play in wrinkle production? As we age, collagen production slows down and “thins” thus causing wrinkles to form as the natural support structure of the skin (collagen) decreases. Without enough collagen, wrinkles and lines start to form wherever the skin moves.

How does Collagen work…and does it last? Small amounts are injected directly into collagen deficit areas – just under the surface of the skin. This replenishment gives additional support to your bodies own support structure (existing collagen) and causes the newly raised skin to “smooth out.” Collagen is absorbed at varying rates and so touch up injections may be needed to maintain your new look. Since the body may deposit its own collagen at the site of the implantation, part or all of the correction may last up to 2 years or longer.

How often will I need a “touch up” injection? For lines or furrows, patients usually decide to have a touch up injection within 3 -12 months from the original treatment series. For scar treatment patients who were treated with Zyplast or Cosmoplast, less frequent touch ups are required. It’s important for you to know and remember that the amount of Collagen needed for a touch up (to restore full correction) will be considerably less than that used in the initial treatment.
