Is Thermage safe? It is very safe! The ThermaCool TC system by Thermage that we use is FDA approved since it has been carefully studies in use by hundreds of patients with only minimal side effects and no lasting adverse effects. Before receiving FDA approval, Thermage treatment was approved by the Canadian HPB as a non-surgical browlift and for non-surgical tightening of periorbital (around the eyes) wrinkles and facial wrinkles.
How is Thermage done? The main structural component of the skin is a protein called “collagen”. Collagen provides the skin with its strength. As we age, our bodies produce less and less collagen and then we begin to notice sagging, wrinkles, and loss of facial contour and sagging under the arms, the buttocks, legs and other body areas. The Thermage procedure uses patented radio frequency technology to create a precisely controlled zone of heating in the dermis (deep layer of the skin) and in the underlying tissue. At the same time the epidermis (visible outer skin) is being protected by continual cooling. This “heating” causes the “collagen” to tighten thereby reducing skin laxity, wrinkles and renewing the contour of the face and other treated body areas. Thermage treatment also causes new collagen production to occur over time. Thermage is the only non-invasive, non-surgical method available today to effectively tighten loose skin and achieve a “non-surgical” lift.
Where is Thermage performed and how long does it take? Dr Covey is very skilled and expert in performing Thermage treatments . These are done right in our office suite on an outpatient basis. Generally, Thermage treatments take less than an hour – but the time will vary based on the size of the area being treated.
How does Thermage compare to Titan? Thermage is FDA approved for treating certain wrinkles, can achieve in a single treatment what may take Titan several treatments, and uses RF (Radiofrequency) which is proven to treat wrnikles. Lastly, thermage has a much longer track record.
What does Thermage feel like – Is it painful? NO – it is not painful. Our patients usually experience a brief “hot” sensation followed by an immediate cool sensation. This is caused by the “pulsing” from the radio frequency instrument used to perform this procedure. One hour before your treatment – an anesthetic cream is applied to the area to minimize the hot-cool sensations. Your comfort if our primary concern.
How will I look right after the treatment – are there any side effects? “Pretty Normal.” Most patients experience some redness - which goes away in few hours. Dr. Covey personally oversees this treatment to ensure minimal risks and a positive, more youthful outcome for you!
How soon are results noticeable – how long do the results last? Initial results are visible within a few weeks as “tightening, smoothing, improved tone and texture” is seen in the treated areas. The long-term results occur over time as the healthier collagen tightens and wrinkles lessen. Studies show that the results can last from several months to several years – all depending upon the individual aging process.
How many Thermage treatments are required – how much do they cost? One single treatment can produce excellent results – but some patients may require more. We generally recommend one treatment to each specific area being treated. New studies will show us how to change treatment plans. Cost varies and is determined by the extent of your procedure as it is customized just for you.
When can I return to my normal routine? Immediately! Remember – this is a non-surgical procedure and there is usually NO downtime. You may experience some redness – but this usually resolves itself shortly after the treatment.
