Neck News: Toss Those Scarves and Turtlenecks
Just as the skin on your face ages and endures the elements, the delicate neck area is prone to changes in color and tautness that many of us don’t like.
You may notice brown spots and pigmentation, particularly on the decolletage. Or, this chest area may appear red, blotchy or wrinkly, most often due to excessive exposure to the sun. Some people develop little lines or bands that run horizontally around the neck, and others have vertical cords (platysmal bands) that become prominent. Also, when collagen and elastin decreases over time, the skin on the neck may sag and look crepey.

Fall is the time for getting back to work and hitting the books. With vacation time behind us, we tend to become more serious in general about our day to day lives and responsibilities. An important part of every day is how we feel, with happiness being the overwhelming goal for many people. When we are happy, we typically do better–at work, at home, at school, and everywhere else.

Microneedling–The Latest in Wrinkle Reduction
You may have heard recently about one of the newest techniques for skin tightening and wrinkle reduction–microneedling. Some of you may be wondering what, exactly, this is.
Simply put, microneedling is a treatment for boosting your skin’s natural production of collagen and elastin, which are two of the most important substances for keeping your skin plump and youthful. Tiny needles, ones that are much smaller than the needles we use with dermal fillers, puncture the top layer of your skin, triggering your body to create the new collagen and elastin. Results may include improved texture and firmness, and I’ve seen terrific success in the reduction of acne scarring, pore size and stretch marks.
The microneedling device that has shown exemplary results in the neck, face and eye area is called Infini. It’s a radiofrequency (RF) device that smooths wrinkles and firms and plumps skin that has been damaged by routine aging, overexposure to the sun, acne or other stressful conditions. An alternative to other fractional anti-aging treatments, Infini requires little recuperation time while offering the results of a nonsurgical facelift. Also, it may be used on all types and colors of skin, even that which is dark or tanned. So, it’s an opportune time to consider having the treatment, after a summer in the sun.
One of the benefits of Infini is that it targets only the layers of the skin that need treating. Put Your Best Face Forward
Though the official start of autumn is not for another month, this week marks the end of summer for many of us. The post-Labor Day back-to-work, back-to-school mindset begins in earnest after next weekend and with it comes a little reflection on how the summer went.
Did it go too quickly? Did I relax enough? Not relax enough? Check off everything on my do-it-this-summer list?
If you spent some time on the beach, it may also be the time to assess how your skin handled the sun. You may be noticing a few more dark spots on your face and body–hyperpigmentation, we call it. Whether brown or black, large or small, these spots and freckles can appear anywhere, often on your face, chest, arms and hands. The sun’s UV rays can cause these marks to crop up, even after one day. Natural aging is also a culprit.
To reduce sunspots, freckles, age/liver spots, which are usually small and flat, we offer treatments of Fraxel Dual Laser, Intense Pulsed Light and Diolite.
Other types of hyperpigmentation can emerge, too, at all times of year. These are due to different triggers, and we have treatments for all of them. Take a look below at which type you may have…
Melasma: Look for light to medium brown discoloration, usually on the cheeks, sides of your face, upper nose, forehead and lips. You may see splotchy patches in irregular sizes and shapes. Often, melasma appears when you are pregnant or have just gone through childbirth (it’s sometimes called “The Mask of Pregnancy”). A hormone surge during these times can cause the changes in your skin. Combined with excessive sun exposure, the effects may be pronounced.
Our treatment: Fraxel Dual Laser
PIH: Look for flat pink, red or brown spots on the face. If you’ve had inflammatory acne, you may be prone to this sort of hyperpigmentation.
Our treatment: Light salicylic acid chemical peels
Facial Blood Vessels: Vascular lesions, commonly called “spider veins” are extra blood vessels that are superficially located in the skin. Often, the skin of cheeks, chin and forehead appear red.
Our treatment: Diolite, IPL
Our best advice for minimizing spots is to stay clear of the sun and wear sunscreen–and more sunscreen–every time that you go out, even in the upcoming weeks and through the fall.
